American Idol has changed my Behavior

By thebehavioranalyst

Yes, it is true, I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and American Idol changed my behavior.

American Idol begins its new season again. The AI commercial promos indicate that it is going to be a great 7th season. I actually doubt that. I have never been a major fan of the show. I had occasionally watched here and there during seasons 1 – 4. Then I had caught the AI audition of Taylor Hicks. I got hooked, watched every week, rooted and voted for him all throughout the 5th season.

Next, I watched some of the 6th season, Melinda Doolittle caught my attention. She was the best, most consistent and talented singer out of the whole bunch for that season. But she got voted off during the semi finals. I stopped watching and boycotted American Idol.

In the news lately, some of the Idols have been dropped by their record companies. Not a very smart PR move for American Idol. I could careless about Katherine McPhee, sad for Rubin but upset about Taylor Hicks. It is very unfortunate that the record company that he signed with did not properly promote him like they did for Daughtry. I like Daughtry too, but Taylor was not given his due. Taylor, after all was the winner.

The show is obviously losing its luster. Season 5 had the most viewers and voters with Taylor Hicks as the winner. Season 6, American Idol’s ratings declined.  The music industry economically is crashing. Though it does not surprise me either since most of the crap they are producing today are just loud boom boom songs that consist of a few repetitive music measures.

Next, I cringed as I am driving and listening to the radio commercial for AI 7. They feature several people that are not good singers, but AI just exploits this anyway. Off key and screeching singers is entertainment?

Yes indeed, American Idol has become an aversive for me that I want to avoid. For now, I am not interested in watching the show. There are better shows during the same time slots that are more worth while.

Will I be missing much? No, I do not think so. Simon will be Simon. Paula and Randy will say their usual responses.

American Idol has lost its effect. America’s Got Talent was more interesting, creative, intelligent and demonstrated various talented individuals and groups. I will most likely watch that again this upcoming Summer.

American Idol has changed my behavior, I won’t be watching this show much this year, if at all.

Nice article. I agree with every word you said.I don’t know if you noticed, but AI had to realize the ratings they got from Taylor fans during season 5 and their ratings loss last season was due partly b/c of their outright horried treatment of Taylor b/c low and behold guess who auditions and makes it to hollywood ….Melanie, Taylor’s backup singer during his spring tour.If you ask me, it was a slick way for AI to try and gain back some of his fans. But then, they turn around and cut him out of opening credits.AI will never get it.

If you don’t find anything else on tv to hold your interest , here is an idea. go to Youtube or Vimeo and put Taylor Hicks in search. You will find an endless variety of videos from Taylors tour shows and many others. Many are excellent and you can spend your evening watching someone with real talent. Or go to his myspace and listen to some of his live music there. I can entertain myself all evening with Taylors music.
I love Melanie and wish her well, but I do think ,they think they might get some interest from the Taylor fans . But as long as they continue to disrespect Taylor and Nigel talks in articles about how he wasn’t the strongest contestent of season 5, I will never watch again. If he wasn’t the strongest contestent that who was. Who else drew the studio audience that he did, Who else was always in the top 3, who else gave them the biggest ratings they ever had or will ever have. Who else have them the biggest vote they have ever had or will ever have and who else gave them the bigger summer tour they ever had or will ever have. 90% of it was Taylor.

Season 5 created more excitement than any season before. Yes, there was a lot of talent during that season, but the main draw was TAYLOR HICKS! Heck, even Rebecca Romain Stamos requested Taylor sing Jailhouse Rock as an encore – by the way, I don’t recall that ever happening to anyone before or since. I think AI is definately losing it’s edge. I did watch Tues nite and last nite and there are a couple of good prospects, but they once again put through some Sanjaya’s that should never have made it through. If it doesn’t get better I probably won’t watch. Good luck to Taylor Hicks – this is a guy who just wants to sing and be a working musician – not a millionaire – I will continue to go see him whenever I get the chance and I will definately buy his music and can’t wait for the release of his DVD Whomp at the Warfield.

I’m not watching. A little tired of Nigel & Simon telling us we got it wrong. So they backed who they wanted anyway. If that’s the way the show is run why waste time watching and voteing. Let Simon & Nigel go to auditions pick who they want and sing ‘em and promote ‘em. I take myself out of the equation.

I agree with most of what you are saying. However, American Idol is still in the market for ratings and making money, just like every other show. You’re going to see the screechers for the ratings, not so much the entertainment.

I’ve watched both episodes this week, and Simon is NOT his usual self. At least not yet. He has been civil both nights, and quite caring.

That you for letting us post about our favorite singer. Without this site, it would be really difficult to share the latest news about them.
